Welcome to Makumbura Multimodal Centre

The development of the first Multi-Modal Centre (MMC) is being carried out by the Township Development Project (3K Project) of the Greater Colombo Urban Transport Development Project with the financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Sri Lanka at Makumbura, in Kottawa Interchange. The Makumbura MMC has been identified as the first facility of its kind in Sri Lanka integrating the transit passengers from bus and railway.
It is imperative to the plan for the terminal operation, maintenance, and business model development/marketing with proper arrangements to supportive modern technology to meet the international standard. Therefore, most appropriate system to be adapted to the first Multi-Modal Centre in Sri Lanka to enhance the requirement of common transport system and discourage the private vehicle usage. Eventually this would be lessons learnt for next Multi-Modal Centres (MMCs) intended to implement under the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development.

About Us…

The concept of developing Makumbura Multimodal Center – Kottawa is to integrate the transport modes and develop an interchange township to support in providing convenient and reliable public transportation to ease the heavily congested traffic on main arteries towards Colombo. The facility initially will provide services relocating the long-distance services starting from Maharagama to Galle and Mathara and to Makumbura, starting some local feeder services currently serving from Kottawa and linking Kalani Valley railway line through a brand-new railway station, replacing the one in Malapalla.

The other modes of transport that will be operating from MMC-K are passenger transporting taxi cervices and private vehicles. Further, the center is planned to operate financially independently.
